2019 Grace Tournament – success in the sun
This was the 5th Grace tournament in its current form. The finals were played on Saturday 30th March on a beautiful warm sunny day, slightly different to the conditions some of the matches were played in!
This year 44 players took part and raised £590 through entry fees. We also ran a raffle on the day with one of the prizes being a spectacular piled up high chocolate and marshmallow cake courtesy of Jo Marshall, a great supporter of the Charity. Thank you, Jo.
In terms of matches themselves, we have been trying a few different formats for the Finals day. Feedback from last year was that best of 3 championship tie breaks to 10 is just not long enough and doesn’t allow players to really get in to their matches. So this year, the semis were played as a long set to 8, and the finals themselves as a long set to 10.
This format made it very competitive with some great come backs on display!
We had 3 couples who were all in the semis; Mr & Mrs Jenkins, Mr and Mrs Jager, and Mr and Mrs Kelly!
We started with the Mixed Doubles semis followed by the Final which was won by Will and Nicky after a great come back from 1-5 down against Rachel and Alastair. Will’s serve was really warming up towards the end, serving up 4 blistering serves in the final game to secure the match! Match was won 10-8 in the end.
Prizes were presented by Arnold.
Rachel and Alastair, Mixed Doubles Runners Up
The Men’s final was a revenge match between George and Roger vs Simon and John. Simon and John had lost this match up in their table so started off very strong pulling ahead 5-2, but George and Roger started coming back and taking it to a tiebreak at 9-9 which they won in the end. This was an excellent close match and lots of spectators. All the shots were chased after with great athleticism and every corner of the court used, thank you for an excellent match guys! The silver was presented by Emma Hunter.
George and Roger, Mens Doubles Winners
Simon and John, Mens Runners Up
One of the Ladies Semis featured Victoria and Sally who put up an excellent fight against the eventual winners Lesley and Tricia, giving them a scare along the way by pulling back strong. Very well done to both on your first Grace tournament and playing it in great spirits.
Ladies finals featured Catherine and Sian vs Lesley and Tricia. This was probably the only match of the day which was fairly one sided, which George nearly missed but managed to rush back to watch the last few games. Catherine and Sian won 10-2.
Prizes were presented by our great coach and leader, Brian Love.
Sian and Catherine, Ladies Doubles Winners
Lesley and Tricia, Ladies Doubles Runners Up
So, we had George Jenkins winning the Mens and Sian Jenkins the Ladies, can just imagine the conversation over dinner on Saturday evening!! Very well played to both of you, amazing achievement.
Thank you to everyone for all your support and generosity and many congratulations to all the finalists, great effort by all.
Until the Autumn!
Jeanette, Will, Alastair and Maryam
