Dorking Welcomes new Tennis Coach
(Posted: 15th Mar 12)
We are pleased to welcome a new coach to our coaching team. His name is Valentin, he is 25 years old and comes from Romania. He speaks very good English along with four other European languages!
As a junior he played to a very high level and has played professional team tennis in Germany as well as in national and international tournaments. He has developed great coaching skills from all his experiences in other European countries from club tennis to coaching in prestigious hotels.
“I am a high performance coach with extensive experience working with all levels, from beginner to performance, of all ages. I am passionate about tennis and enjoy discovering and developing new talents. I am hard working and believe in mutual respect and positive encouragement. I look forward to being a positive influence at Dorking Tennis Club working with all standards. I look forward to seeing you all around the club.” - Valentin
Valentin is available for coaching and you can contact him on 07919 453206 to arrange a lesson.
Calling all tennis and squash and social members who like a party!
(Posted: 15th Mar 12)
Our lovely social committee are considering organising one of their dazzling black tie dinner dances later in the year but, before they spend time gathering prices, making bookings and softening up the chefs to come up with something as good as Caroline Stamp can, they need to know if you’d like one!
The DINNER DANCE is likely to be in October (but the committee are open to suggestions) at the Betchworth Golf Club.

UPDATE re Memorial Service The Club is sad to announce the death of past-chairman, Peter Johnson.
(Posted: 24th Feb 12)
The Club is sad to announce the death of past-club chairman Peter Johnson on Saturday 4th February. Peter was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2010 and suffered a severe stroke just before Christmas. He was 75.
Peter will be buried at a private family funeral on Friday and friends are invited to a memorial service to be held at St John's Church, North Holmwood at 11am on 2nd March, and afterwards at the Clubhouse.
A long standing club member, Peter was club Chairman from 1998 to 2003. A regular with the men’s mid-week tennis groups until a few months before becoming ill, Peter was a larger-than-life character who maintained an in-depth interest in the running of the club and contributed in a very hands-on way.
At this sad time, our thought and prayers are with Peter’s family, particularly his wife Virginia and their children – Edward, Samantha, Richard and Thomas.

DLTSC 'MOLE VALLEY SPORTS CLUB OF THE YEAR - 2010'
(Posted: 23rd Nov 10)
At the prestigious Mole Valley Sporting Awards ceremony, held at Dorking Halls on Friday 12th November, the Dorking Lawn Tennis and Squash Club was awarded the ‘Mole Valley Sports Club of the Year’ award for 2010.
To qualify for this award, nominees had to meet a wide range of criteria including holding the LTA ClubMark accreditation which the club achieved in July of this year.
These awards recognise the continuing effort put in by the members, staff, coaches and volunteers to ensure that the club operates in all areas to the highest standards and, in particular, the emphasis on encouraging youngsters of all abilities to play to the best of their abilities and to enjoy their sport.
To receive the award from the Chairman of Mole Valley District Council were Juniors’ Director Destine Watson, Club Head Coach Brian Love, Club Administrator Linda Deslandes, Men’s Captain Steve Peters, Hamish Chalmers, Leslie Jackson and junior members Alex Jackson, Chris Ogden, Pippa-Feng Ratzke, Beth Quick and Kemal Dogansoy.
Congratulations to all those involved in helping our club achieve these two notable and prestigious awards during 2010,
Tennis Clubmark, awarded by the LTA in July, and
Mole Valley Sports Club of the Year – 2010
awarded by the Mole Valley Sports Council in November.
DLTSC achieves LTA Clubmark accreditation
(Posted: 23rd Nov 10)
Dorking Lawn Tennis and Squash Club has been awarded the prestigious Tennis Clubmark accreditation by the Lawn Tennis Association. On Thursday 15th July, Claire Hamilton, Surrey LTA Tennis Development Manager, presented the award plaque to DLTSC Chairman Bob Gray which will be proudly displayed in the club pavilion.
Clubmark was introduced by Sport England in 2002 and is currently being implemented across 34 sports. The LTA administers its own version of Clubmark based on the National guidelines for best practice.
On receiving the award, Bob Gray said “Clubmark is an important step forward for the Club and demonstrates our continuing determination to provide the people of Dorking and the surrounding area with top class tennis and coaching facilities in a safe and enjoyable environment for players of all ages and standards. A lot of hard work has gone into gaining Clubmark status and I congratulate the Club team on their achievement.”
Dorking Tennis and Squash Club has thriving competitive and social tennis and squash sections with teams and individuals playing at County standard and boasts a total membership of approximately 900. Great emphasis is placed on the coaching and development of junior members in a supportive and family friendly environment. Playing ages range from ‘Mini-Juniors’ aged five and upwards to Veterans, a number of whom are still enjoying their sport well into their eighties!
The Club has nine tennis courts (six artificial grass and three all weather) and three heated squash courts, together with a well equipped warm-up room and pavilion with bar. A full-time professional coaching team is available and membership for squash and tennis is open to all ages and playing standards including beginners.

Tennis Weekend in France
(Posted: 22nd Jun 09)
40 tennis players from Germany, France and the UK took part in a fun mixed doubles tennis tournament near Paris on the weekend of 12th to 14th June 2009. The event was hosted by the twinning committee of a group of small towns and villages in the Beauce region, which is 50 miles south west of Paris. There were six competitors from Dorking, 11 from Germany and 23 from the host clubs. The matches were played at three tennis clubs, Aunay sous Auneau, Denonville and Beville, each of which had just two tennis courts and some matches were also played in the grounds of a beautiful chateau.
The competition started with a round robin at each venue and the intention was that each man would play a 20 minute match with each lady player and the man and woman with the most wins from each venue would then compete in the semi finals. Unfortunately for Dorking’s best players, Tom Lester and Robert Lightwood, the results from their venues were a bit of a lottery and the three Dorking players who reached the semi finals were Harriet and Bob Gray and Scott Sullivan. The semi finals were very close, with the Grays losing 21-19, whilst Scott and his French lady partner with a powerful forehand, squeezed into the final, which they then won in dramatic fashion by 17-16, having trailed 13-16.
The hospitality from the French was outstanding for the whole weekend, which started on the Friday afternoon with a boat trip along the river Seine in Paris accompanied by the Germans. There were 50 to 60 people at the multicultural dinners on Friday and Saturday evenings, where everything was provided by the French hosts. Although many of the French and Germans spoke either very little or no English, the Dorking team, inspired by the star of the weekend, Mr Happy (Kiwi!), had two great evenings, culminating in an interesting rendition of Waltzing Matilda from Dorking’s Australian tournament winner!
